Hobby Master 1/72nd scale HA3327 Northrop F-5E Tiger II 3528, 935th Fighter Regiment, VPAF, late 1970s. Only 400 produced.
The Northrop F-5 tactical fighter was designed as an extremely maneuverable, supersonic fighter with a high rate of reliability at a low operating cost. The F-5 first flew on July 30, 1959 with the first customer delivery in 1964. The last of more than 2,600 F-5’s was produced in 1989 and about two-thirds of these are still in service with 26 countries more than 4 decades later. The F-5 was manufactured by Northrop Grumman and under license in Canada, Taiwan, South Korea, Spain and Switzerland.
After the collapse of South Vietnam many VPAF (Vietnam People Air Force) Regiments were formed in the north. On May 21, 1975 the 935th Fighter Regiment was established as part of the 370th Air Division at Bien Hao Air Base equipped with former VNAF aircraft. On May 27, 1975 the unit flew its first Northrop aircraft mission against any remaining opposition. In 1979 the Soviets delivered MiG-21s that were based with the 935th FR F-5s. This mix of aircraft became logistically too complicated so the 935th FR moved their F-5s to Da Nang.
