The second VAQ-142 was established in 1997 and in 2003 was deployed to Bagram in support of “Operation Enduring Freedom”. They once again returned to Bagram and between July 2006 and January 2007 fling 187 days of missions. In October 2007 VAQ-142 again deployed to Iraq for 6 months in support of “Operation Iraqi Freedom”. This aircraft briefly featured a sharkmouth painted under the nose for a few months during its 2006 deployment.

The Prowler is a key element in any USN or USMC strike-force by disrupting and jamming enemy radio and radar signals, providing protection for attacking aircraft as they carry out their mission. The aircraft can also be equipped with anti-radiation missiles desigend to home-in on enemy radar installations and neutralize surface-to-air missile threats. After a long history with the EA-6B, the US Navy began transitioning to the F/A-18G Growler in 2009.
